What are some signs you need a breast reduction?

For some women, the decision to reduce their breast size comes from a desire to have breasts that are more aesthetically proportioned to their body size. Other women want to eliminate embarrassment or anxiety caused by excessively large breasts and, in the process, boost their self-confidence.

Overly large breasts weigh enough to interfere with physical activity and cause constant soreness of the neck, back, shoulders, and head. Skin irritation and rashes are common among women with excessively larger breasts — some even experience poor circulation and difficulty breathing.

How is breast reduction achieved?

One of the most important steps of a breast reduction is your initial consultation with the physician. During this meeting, you can look at before-and-after photographs and talk about the size of breasts you want. Your final satisfaction depends on making sure that you can define — and the doctor clearly understands — your expectations.

Some women may be able to reduce the size of their breasts by using liposuction. This procedure works best for those whose breast size is primarily due to extra fatty tissue. However, it’s only considered when you need a slight reduction in size and have little sagging to correct.

Surgery to reduce breast size, called breast mammoplasty, begins by removing excess breast fat, skin, and glandular tissue. Then, the remaining underlying breast tissue is lifted and shaped, and the nipple and areola are transplanted to a higher position on the breast. During surgery, the size of the areola can also be changed to fit the new breast size.

What can you expect after breast reduction?

When the surgery is finished, dressings are applied and your doctor may recommend a support bra or elastic bandage to minimize swelling. You’ll need to limit your activity for the first week following surgery — keeping elbows down at your sides and avoiding excessive motion, abrasion, straining, or lifting while the incision heals.

Your doctor will give you individualized instructions on how to care for your breasts during recovery. Most women should plan on 1 week of downtime. It typically takes 3-4 weeks of healing before you can safely resume full activity.

Your breast reduction surgery is long-lasting, but it can’t fight or prevent the effect of aging and time. Gaining and/or losing weight, hormonal changes, and gravity still impact the appearance of your reduced breasts.
